CHAPTER SIX

The journey back to Aaron’s house was quiet and Kasey leaned forward to adjust the stream of cold air pouring out of the air-conditioner vents. She darted a look at Aaron and saw that he was looking at her, that infuriatingly sexy half smile on his face.

He looked confident and relaxed, everything Kasey wasn’t feeling since she was having second, and third and fourth, thoughts. Should she tell him that she was unsure? She opened her mouth to speak but then he placed his hand on her bare thigh, his thumb drawing patterns on her bare skin.

Nope, she wanted this, she wanted him. No doubts allowed…

Kasey heard her distinctive ringtone, surprised to see that her phone had synced with the onboard display on Aaron’s dashboard. She immediately recognized the number on the screen. Before she could tell Aaron to disconnect the call, he hit the button on his steering wheel and answered, his voice as steady and calm as always. “Phillips here.”

After a beat of silence, Dale’s voice filled the car. “I’m looking for Kasey. Who the hell are you and why are you answering her phone?”

Irritation flashed across Aaron’s face and Kasey dived for her bag, trying to find her phone to cut off the call. “I’m her boss. Who the hell are you and what do you want?”

“I’m her husband. I want to talk to Kasey.”

Kasey pulled the bag onto her lap as Aaron whipped the SUV into his driveway, stopped in front of the gates and pressed the remote control on his visor. The gates opened and Aaron steered the car up the long driveway. Anger suffused his face. “I thought you were divorced,” he muttered, looking at her.

“I am,” Kasey replied. Giving up her search for her phone, she ran a hand over her forehead. “What do you want, Dale?”

“Just a damned conversation. Is that too much to ask?” Dale tacked on a foul curse at end of his statement and Aaron’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“Watch your mouth, moron,” he growled.

“Dale, I’m hot and tired, and I really don’t want to spoil my day talking to you,” Kasey said.

“Listen, we need to discuss what happened, why our marriage ended. You need to understand that—”

Kasey looked at Aaron and slashed her hand across her neck. Aaron immediately disconnected the call and then pulled his car into his huge garage. He shut off the engine and sent Kasey an inscrutable look before getting out of the car and walking around the hood. However, instead of opening the back door to pick up the bags of supplies, as she’d expected, he yanked open her door, put his hands around her waist and physically lifted her from the vehicle.

Not allowing her feet to hit the floor, he leaned her up against the side of the car and crushed his mouth to hers, silencing the protest she was about to make. His tongue invaded her mouth, and all thoughts of Dale and what he wanted, or could want, and the heat and frustration of the day, melted away.
